Nothing is more unattractive then a lawn that is brown, patchy and is overrun by weeds. Many of us struggle every spring and summer trying to keep our lawns healthy and looking good. Knowing and understanding basic lawn care can help many to grow a greener lawn.
Watering a lawn is one of the most important things that one can do to grow a greener lawn. Many of us know that in order to grow grass that it needs to be watered, but many of us are not sure exactly how often or how much we should be watering our lawn. A lawn should be watered about three times a week. When watering the grass make sure that the lawn is watered deeply. This means that the soil should be saturated about one inch per 12 inches of soil in order to water the grass deeply. By watering deeply encourages the roots of the grass to grow deeper into the soil. Having a deeper root system will help the lawn survive if it experiences drought.

The blades of grass should be cut no more than 1/3 of the grass blade. If the grass blade is cut shorter than this length it will stress the lawn. A lawn that is stressed has difficulty absorbing nutrients and as a result will turn brown in color. One should make sure that the mower blade is set at the right height and the blades are sharp in order to keep the lawn looking green.

Applying fertilizer to a lawn is a great way to insure that the lawn is receiving enough nutrients to stay healthy. During the peak growing season a lawn needs to be fertilized to make sure that the lawn is receiving enough nutrients during times of rapid growth. Over fertilizing a lawn can damage the grass, so it is important to follow the package directions.

Insects and fungal diseases can damage a lawn very quickly. It can be difficult to determine if a lawn is infested with insects or various fungal diseases. Brown or yellow patches can sometimes be an indication of pests or diseases. If this happens it is best to have a professional lawn company to determine what type of treatment would be beneficial in treating the lawn.

Growing a greener lawn can be quite simple when basic care is applied. Having the right tools and knowledge when growing a lawn can help to ensure a healthy lawn. Growing a greener lawn does not have to be a dream any longer.
