Planting shrubs can be a great way to hide that ugly outdoor air-conditioning unit. You can also create a sort of privacy fence around your house and create a sort of anchor for a small flower bed. I will list a few that seem to be the popular choice.

The first is a small hardy evergreen shrub called Liriope. This shrub has dark green grass-like foliage and also blooms lavender, white or purple flowers. This is one of those anchoring shrubs and some varieties can reach two feet tall. These shrubs prefer moist soil with light shade but will survive in full sun or afternoon sun as well.

The next is a southern favorite for hedges called Red-Tip Photinia. This shrub will start our bright red fading to a dark and glossy green as it matures. This shrub will grow all the way to the ground so it will never have that leggy overgrown appearance. The summer time will bring this shrub small white flowers as well as berries. This shrub prefers well drained soil and can with stand summer heat with minimal watering.

The next will be a best choice for year round interest called Holly. This shrub comes in evergreen varieties for most every zone. This shrub works well as a foundation shrub, as well as a privacy screen. Holly can discourage neighbors from crossing your lawn as well as providing winter berries for birds. Holly is a shrub that is dioecious which means that you must plant a male and female within forty feet of each other in order for them to produce berries. This shrub is not picky about soil and will grow in sun or shade.

Now I will go through and list a few different plants that are great for landscaping as well. Plants are one of the secrets in landscaping. Plants and color are a way to bring your landscaping to life. The perennials that are a popular choice are as follows:

Ornamental grasses are the most carefree plants that require next to nothing as far as maintenance. These plants are bothered by few if any pests or diseases, and are also very pretty as well. There are many choices when it comes to these plants is amazing. They can be different colors in small and large sizes.

Daylilies with their grass-like foliage are another popular choice. They come in a large assortment of colors and are one of the easiest plants to care for. If you have these beautiful flowers in many different colors you will be sure to have a attractive landscape.

Annuals are used as well in landscapes and the king of this class is Coleus. These are a stunning sun-loving plant that are so easy to grow they are included in most landscapes. These can be grown in containers or planted and either way they look great. Coleus can come in many varieties of color and textures as well.

These are just a few ideas for you. When you are starting a landscape be sure to try something original, don;t just copy someone else. You can create something you will be proud of because it is all yours. That is the point of gardening so have fun with it. After you are done you can sit back and enjoy the beauty.

Nothing brightens up a house like a few green thriving plants. The problem with this is that most people have a hard time keeping them alive. The biggest obstacle many face is trying to find the right plant for the light level in their home. Some people have the advantage of having the southern facing windows which provide great light for any plant the want, but that’s not the case for most of us. What is the best solution for this? There are several different plants that will survive low light and most of them are fairly easy to take care of as well. Here is a list of five top plants I believe to be the best for low light homes. I will list their common known names as well as their botanical names. There will also be a sp by their name if any plant in that family will work.

Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema sp.)
This plant is one of the most common and popular house plants because it is easy to care for as well as pretty to look at. Even though the name is evergreen it looks nothing like a pine or fir tree. The leaves can grow to be 1 and a half feet long. Though the leaves can be variegated you can pick which pattern of leaf you prefer. This plants leaves grow in upright clumps on short stems and can grow feet tall. This is a tropical-looking and can fill up any dull corner in your home.

Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum sp.)
When looking for house plants most of them are just foliage, but the peace lily can offer you gorgeous and huge white flowers along with dark green leaves. This single petaled flower will rise up above the green leaves for pretty view. This plant is also considered a great plant for cleaning toxins out of the air. These plants prefer to be damp so you should never allow them to dry out. The leaves can be somewhat toxic so should not be kept in a home that has small children or pets that might eat them. These plants can grow to be 2 to 3 feet tall.

Snake Plant (Sansevieria sp.)
This plant can also be known as the common name of Mother- in -Law’s tongue. This plant is very dramatic looking with its long stiff leaves that come up from the base of the plant. Most of them have stripes nut may also have other patterns with yellow or silver color variations. These are desert plants so be sure not to over water them. Try to let them dry out between waterings. These plants can grow between 2 and 3 feet tall.

Cast Iron Plant (Aspidistra sp.)
This is another large leafy plant, though this one is not as impressive than the others. These leaves are usually just plain green, and will grow about 2 feet long. This one is a tough and sturdy plant (hence the name) and will grow in any conditions. This plant is the perfect choice for someone with a brown thumb.

Devil’s Ivy (Epipremnum sp.)
Unlike the other large plants I have mentioned this is a smaller climbing plant. This plant is best suited for hanging baskets or table top pots. The leave are green with mottled yellow though other colors can be found. You can let the leaves grow long or can be pruned down to keep it smaller.

Any of these plants will work well in Low light homes. Enjoy them.

If you are like most of us and do not have the space to have the garden you would like or your plants are not growing as well as you would like this is your answer. A raised garden is easy to build and will allow you to artificially provide more topsoil. This will allow your plants to thrive and flourish as you want.

You will want to draw out a plan and shape for your raised garden. This will not take much. You will basically build an open topped and opened bottomed box. You will be basically building forms to pour soil into. You will need to figure how much space you will have before building anything. This will help you figure out how much materials you will need.

The next step is to decide what you would like to build your raised garden out of. You can build them out of just about anything. These can be made out of lumber, plastic, synthetic wood, railroad ties, bricks, rocks and basically anything that can hold dirt. Most people prefer using wood because it is the easiest and most efficient way.

You will need to gather your supplies at this point. Figure out all you need and be sure that you have all before you start. The only thing that is required is sides cut to the length you want and at least 24 inches tall. Of you are wanting to build a triangle garden you will need three sides, and a square will need four sides.

Now we start building connecting the sides together to form the shape. If you choose to use lumber you can use 4 inch by 4 inch post cut to size to serve as corners so that you can just nail or screw your sides into corner pieces. If you do it this way it will increase the strength and ensure it stays in place and keeps the dirt in as well. Cut a piece of gardening plastic or weed mat to put a barrier down. Laying this barrier down will help reduce the amount of weeds that appear in your garden.

Next you will need to place your frame where you will want it. You can use any weighted materials you need as well to ensure it stays in position while you pour soil. You will want to lay a layer of manure first and then layer potting soil on top. To save a little bit of money you can add some soil, up to 50% from other parts of your property if you have it. You will need to fill at least one third of your garden with compost or composted manure, available in most nurseries or garden centers.

Now all you need to do is put all your vegetables or flowers where you want them. This is really all you really need to create your raised garden. If your are limited on space this will be the best bet for you. If you are determined to have a great garden this will grow and be beautiful as well as any garden.

When you begin the project of building a pond for fish be sure to consider everything. You will need to figure out what kind of fish you want then go from there. You may want to consider the size of your pond as well. If you are only able to build a small one you have to really consider the type of fish to put in it. Many fish need a certain size pond to thrive.

The most common fish for garden ponds are goldfish and koi. Goldfish can be kept with different types of plants. The koi fish can only be kept with certain types of plants as they like to eat many plants. The koi fish can grow much larger than the goldfish so if your pond is very small goldfish are your best bet.

Gold fish, despite their bad reputation are great fish for ponds. They will survive a long time if cared for properly. There are a few kinds that are great for small ponds. The comet is probably the most popular. They have a longish body with the typical orange or flame colored body. You may also see these fish in pure white. The fantail is also another popular pond choice. These fish are shorter and plumper than the other guys and their tail fin is split giving them their name. The last one I will mention is the orandas. They look somewhat like fantails. They are known by their head growth. Their head growth is known as the hood of a fish because it appears as if its covered in warts. There are many varieties of color in goldfish. There will be plenty to choose from and find the right one for you. These guys will eat mosquito larvae so this may help keep your pond mosquito free. This can be a problem for many ponds.

Koi fish are another popular choice by pond owners. koi fish are Japanese ornamental carps. These fish are not as hardy as the gold fish and can be quite a bit more aggressive. These fish can be disease prone too but are still very attractive fish. Among many pond fish contest you will find these guys. The koi have very striking colors and varieties which makes them a hot item for many pond owners. The koi fish unlike the goldfish has almost ideal symmetry. The koi fish has a torpedo- like form with tapering head. Although after some inbreeding they can have box shaped heads. The females are more attractive as the males become very skinny as the grow. The koi fish can carry blood red to deep red patterns on their backs. With the many different types of color out there when it comes to koi fish they are very popular. These fish seem to be the most sought after pond fish.
If your pond is pretty small you might consider the goldfish to be a good choice. Koi fish will need more room that the goldfish and can be harder to take care of.

The less popular fish for small ponds are the Orfe which are another type of carp. These guys are a schooling fish and should be kept in groups. The Orfe fish need a lot of oxygen and will mainly keep to the surface of the water. These are less popular choice as they tend to jump out of the smaller ponds to catch bugs.

There are a few choices so be creative and get what suits you and your pond.

The first thing that people see when they arrive at the house is the landscape most likely. This is what most people like to call your curb appeal. You will want to create a attractive curb appeal. You will not want too much where it will look crowded. You will want to keep it simple. The reason for this is that you do not know what other people like. If you keep it simple this will let them know they can add their own touches with their own taste.

You will want to design something that is cost efficient but does not look that way. You will want something that will catch a persons eye. If the house does not have a front lawn area or if the grass is dead you might consider adding a little patch of green grass. This will not mean adding a large area, just enough to make it look nicer. Most people will expect to have a little lawn in front.

Try to use concentrated areas of color. This will create a nice focal point that will catch the eye. The little things you can do will help spruce up a plain looking garden. You can add decorative edging as well as placing a small statue or fountain nearby. You will want this landscaping to look very easy to maintain. Most people do not have the time or money to maintain a huge area so try to keep it looking easy to maintain.

There are few other things that can increase your curb appeal when trying to sell a home. Be sure that you be sure to have your plants and shrubs pruned and cut back. You do not want vines of grass and weeds creeping onto the house. This is really uninviting when trying to sell house. If someone is scared to walk on the porch due to long vines of something left over grown this is not good. Be sure that you check around all your shrubs and trees to be sure there is not any trash under them. You will also consider to spruce up your mulch by adding fresh mulch as a top coat to make it look that much nicer.

You will want to keep the grass nice and trimmed. Check any shrubs that might need an extra trim as well. Nothing is more unattractive than an over grown lawn. If you are looking around in the neighbors yards and they all have nice neat grass you will want to do the same. If you are wanting to sell this house you will want to have a green neat lawn. You will want to place large potted plants on the front porch or any doorway to make it look nice. Large tropical plants look nice in this way. This will also show your potential buyer the endless possibilities of using potted plants.

The whole idea is to make it look more inviting and make them want to buy the house. If the landscaping looks nice and simple, yet still creative this will definitely help sell the house.

The first thing to keep in mind is that a lawn mower can be dangerous if not used properly. Before starting your lawn mower be sure you have checked the area for rocks, large sticks, and always wear proper shoes for example nice tied tennis shoes would be good no flip flops please. Secondly, always remember if you have let your lawn go for a few weeks its best to start slowly. Never just go out and cut it all the way down to original height, You should start off cutting about half way then give your lawn a rest a few days then cut the rest. If you do manage to cut it too short just make sure you give it plenty of water and watch for weeds. Next step is to try to always mow your grass when it is dry. When a lawn is mowed wet it is more likely to get lawn fungus.

Now going back to the lawn mower itself. Always make sure your lawn mower is in good shape. Make sure to check the blade area to make sure there are no obstructions in the way. If your lawn mower is more than a year old you might have to get the blades sharpened. If you are not sure where to do this or not comfortable doing it yourself you can ask your local hardware store or home improvement center, they may be able to help. After this is done you will need to check your wheel height. Usually in the warmer months grass is cut at about 1 inch, 2 inches at the most. In cooler months maybe 2- 3 inches. Lastly you can check any moving parts to see if they feel tight you can add a little oil to make them run smoother.

When you start cutting your grass you want to go in a back and forth pattern moving at a good pace, this can be good exercise as well. If you are on riding mower use the same pattern, back and forth. When you are ready for next row make sure to mow over half the area you just hit that way you can go over any grass you may have missed the first time without doing it all over again and creates a smooth pattern. When you are done be sure to clean up as well as you can using a rake if needed to clean up clippings. Always try to wash off you mower blade with water, also put a little oil on moving parts to prevent rust.

Lastly try to mow early as possible after the dew is dried from the morning. This will be easier on you as well as grass. Just be sure it is dry enough as mention above wet is not good for mowing. Try to cut atleast once a week, two at the most. Grass is like perennial plants in that they stay healthier when a third of the new growth is removed. Be sure to cut grass high and not low as you do not want to scalp your grass and have bald areas. If these steps are followed you will be safe and have a happy and beautiful lawn.
